Characterisation of ecological assemblages – theory and practice

18-21 February 2014

Lecturers: Prof. Gábor Lövei (Aarhus University, Denmark & Fujian University of Agriculture, Fuzhou)

& Dr. Zoltan Elek (Eötvös L University, Budapest, Hungary)

This 4-day long practical course will introduce participants to modern concepts of diversity, and traditional as well as modern ways of describing and comparing ecological assemblages and communities. The concept of diversity will be discussed, and rank-abundance curves, diversity indices, their Rényi-generalisation will be explained and discussed using examples. The practical sessions will use the R program, and the BiodiversityRand the Vegan module. Graphical presentations of diversity representations will be demonstrated. Participants are encouraged to bring their own census or community sample results.

Participants should bring their own laptops, preferably with the R program downloaded.

Suggested time schedule

Day 1 : Theoretical foundations: communities, assemblages, taxocoenes. Sampling of ecological communities: species richness, the veil line, species-abundance distributions.Calculating abundance and species richness in R- overview of available packages in R, the rank abundance curves, species accumulation curves.

Day 2: Diversity indices. Calculating diversity in R: similarity/dissimilarity functions, Diversity in Vegan and BiodiversityR.

Day 3. One parametric diversity families - Rényi profiles,

Day 4:Multivariate techniques – NMDS, Cluster analyses
